Games like Halo: Infinite

2021-11-24
Games like Halo: Infinite Halo: Infinite, the latest game in the 20 years young Xbox franchise, is slated for release in early December. The game will be available on the Xbox Series X and S, as well as the PC and supported platforms on the Xbox game-pass cloud gaming service. The core gameplay mechanics of Halo, a great synergy of gunplay and vehicle combat, have made it a favorite among a generation of gamers.

While many eagerly anticipate the arrival of Halo: Infinite following its interminable delays, for some the way Halo 5: Guardians left fans hanging at the conclusion of its 8-hour campaign has earned it a spot among the most disappointing endings in the history of gaming. For those burned by this experience, but who still want sci-fi super soldier thrills, there are many great alternatives to explore. Below we take a look at some titles that play and look similar to 343 Studio’s blockbuster franchise.

Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2 builds on its predecessor, 2014’s Titanfall, in seeking to deliver a compelling fusion of play styles. Gamers get to experience fast-paced FPS gameplay in addition to the option of piloting giant destructive mechanoid exoskeletons named Titans. Whereas the original Titanfall was a purely multiplayer-oriented game, Titanfall 2 brings an engaging and entertaining campaign mode to enjoy, in addition to further multiplayer action. Gameplay has a distinct strategic element, as choosing to pilot a Titan confers certain advantages on players and teams, as well as drawbacks. Getting to grips with the tactical depth of this play mechanic will keep you coming back for more.

Destiny 2

Undoubtedly the closest thing out there to the Halo games, Destiny 2 is the latest in the Destiny series. These titles are developed by Bungie, the studio behind Halo CE, Halo 2, 3, ODST and Halo: Reach. Bungie left its collaboration with Microsoft Game Studios in order to pursue the development of Destiny, its passion project. The game combines the core gameplay style of Halo with novel MMORPG elements.

It takes place in a vast online world populated with other players, with real-time events, ongoing quest lines and yearly expansions driving continuous development of an in-game storyline and world-building project currently entering its 8th year with no sign of slowing. This type of epic scope may not be for everyone, but Destiny 2 also incorporates a thriving PvP multiplayer community, ensuring there’s something for everyone. The next major expansion, titled The Witch Queen, is slated for release in February 2022 and will bring new game modes and weapons to explore. Destiny 2’s base game is also completely free-2-play, meaning you can jump in without any upfront cost and begin your adventure.

Doom Eternal

Doom Eternal is the latest release in the Doom series, a game that long predates the Halo series and undoubtedly inspired it. The first Doom, developed by id Software in 1993 was a groundbreaking experience that delivered online multiplayer deathmatches, a gaming first. Doom built on the work of id’s first game, Wolfenstein 3D, which was the first true first person shooter. The Doom series has always sought to remain true to this FPS purist legacy, and Doom Eternal is no different. Developed by id Software in collaboration with Bethesda Softworks, it has received critical acclaim, with reviewers citing its phenomenal graphics, terrifying monsters and brilliant physics as strong reasons why this one is a must-try.

The game captures the core aesthetics of the original game, and puts you once again in charge of “doomguy”, the anonymous space marine charged with clearing out legions of demons from claustrophobic and malfunctioning space stations and orbital bases across the solar system. Fans have also praised the added attention to storytelling in this entry, something the series has previously eschewed in favour of prioritising arcade thrills. New DLC is continuously in development, with the latest, The Ancient Gods, adding further campaign levels to the popular story mode.
