Europa Universalis is a historical real-time grand strategy game that includes all aspects of world history in the Early Modern Europe era, a period of time between the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Not to mention, instead of using a turn-based format, the game has opted for a pauseable real-time format, so you can pause the game, issues orders and plan out strategies, before unpausing the game and let the world events play out. There are even tons of historically-based missions and events which may affect the world based on your actions and decisions.

When it comes to grand strategy games, there are only a handful that truly embodies the genre, and obviously, Europa Universalis is one of them. Travian Legends is a medieval-themed MMO strategy game developed by Travian that's quite similar to their other strategy game, Travian: Kingdoms. In this game, you'll play the role of the leader of either the Gauls, the Romans or the Teutons and set off to build up your village in order to turn it into a formidable stronghold to anchor your growing empire to. Resources will also need to be managed so that your empire's growth will increase at the same rate as your village upgrades. Not to mention, there are tons of research that you can even conduct to discover new technologies that can help to either improve your empire's economy or its military strength. As a bonus, there are quests you can complete, achievements to earn and heroes to recruit as well.

In many ways, Travian Legends is quite similar to other MMO strategy games that have taken over the browser-based games platform but the game itself is developed by one of the most reputable leaders in web-based MMOs so you should also take that into account when you're looking for a long-term game to play.
